SMARTS Center welcomes Dr. Parthasarathi Shome and Dr. Carlos Moreno-Leguizamon on a visit to the centre and the AIT campus on December 12, 2025. Centre Director Prof. Joyashree Roy, along with SMARTS researchers, presented the centre’s ongoing work. The visiting professors shared their wisdom and insights from their respective fields and expertise with the SMARTS staff. All parties engaged in fruitful discussions on:
Well-being, its definition, the debate around measuring human happiness, and the consideration of the common goods (e.g., air, water, and land), and the costs of personal comforts (e.g., high emissions from air conditioning). Preserving the traditional values of respecting the planet as a living entity instead of commodifying it.
Human behaviours and change. Seeing behaviour change as a spectrum. Understanding that people can have a subconscious ‘silent demand’ for change, e.g., people experience long congestion every day, they need solutions such as subways or other public transportation.
How the economics discipline, for a very long time, tried to consider welfare, wellbeing, and expansion of the discipline to go beyond GDP as a single metric representing wellbeing.
The conversation ended in high spirits with talks of future opportunities for collaboration and learning between Dr. Parthasarathi Shome, Dr. Carlos Moreno-Leguizamon, and the SMARTS Center.
