Inaugural Bangabandhu Chair Professor Joyashree Roy
Prof. Joyashree Roy is the Inaugural Bangabandhu Chair Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. Prior to joining AIT, Prof. Roy was serving in the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University, India (now on lien).
She is the Founding advisor of the Global Change Programme and Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) Project at Jadavpur University. She was the national fellow of the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR), and a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at LBNL, Berkeley, USA. She was among the IPCC-2007 Nobel Peace Prize winning panel and is in the winning team of Prince Sultan Bin Aziz award for water. She is continuing as Coordinating Lead Author in the Sixth assessment cycle of WGIII, of IPCC and has been a chapter author of Global Energy Assessment. She is the recipient of 2021 Paradigm Award from the Breakthrough Institute, California.
Research Interests
Her research interests are in Economics of Pollution and Climate Change, Modeling energy demand, Economy-wide modeling exercises for deriving policy implications, Water quality demand modeling, Water pricing, Sustainable development, Natural resource accounting, Valuing environmental services, Developmental and environmental issues relevant for informal sectors, Coastal Ecosystem service evaluation, Bangladesh economy and energy policy.
Education Background:
● Ph.D in Economics, from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India.
Concentration: Econometric Modelling of Producer Behaviour for Indian Industries to
understand Demand for Energy.
● Master of Arts in Economics, from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong,
India.
● Bachelor of Arts (with Economics Honours), from Lady Keane Girls College, Shillong,
India.
