In 2018, the "Bangabandhu Chair" Professor and Doctoral Research has been endowed to the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand by the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The Chair is endowed in honour of the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh to its independence in 1971. The Chair is dedicated to a doctoral level advanced technological research on the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, for the people, the planet and for peace.
The Bangabandhu Chair is the first doctoral level Chair named after the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, as a symbol of his dreams and aspirations for a technology-driven ‘Golden Bengal’. The key purpose of the endowment is to conduct research in the Energy sector and any other mutually agreed sector of Bangladesh at AIT by a doctoral student, nominated by the Government of Bangladesh, who will be working on his/her doctoral studies as the “Bangabandhu Chair Fellow” under the guidance of the Bangabandhu Chair Professor, aiming towards advancement of sustainable development in Bangladesh.

On 15th March 2018, a Bangabandhu Chair on ‘Sustainable Energy’ was formally inaugurated at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Government of Bangladesh, to advance doctoral level research on “Sustainable Smart Energy Modelling for Bangladesh”.
Prof. Joyashree Roy from Jadavpur University, India was appointed as the inaugural Bangabandhu Chair Professor, and Mr. Mahmud Hasan from Bangladesh, was selected as the doctoral student to conduct research work on energy sector development of Bangladesh, focusing on the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7); “ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to all”.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is one of the premier international universities in Thailand that plays a leading role in the sustainable development in Asia and beyond. The Bangabandhu Chair is the first doctoral endowment Chair by any country at AIT.
