SMARTS New publication: Integrating demand-side solutions for affordable accelerated decarbonization: a case of Bangladesh power supply system

How can Bangladesh strategize phased accelerations in the transition towards a 100% clean power system?
⚡ ↗️ Our new study by Dr. Firuz Ahamed Nahid and Prof. Joyashree Roy, “Integrating demand-side solutions for affordable accelerated decarbonization: a case of Bangladesh power supply system,” has been published in Energy and Climate Change (Elsevier, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.egycc.2026.100275)
📊We developed a power-sector expansion model using PyPSA by integrating:
- Renewable Energy penetration
- Simultaneous adoption of energy-efficient solutions by electric users
- Introduction of demand-side flexibility in management practice improvements
- All within the NDCs and the rising demand for electricity
❗The results show that for a 100% clean power system by 2050, Bangladesh needs:
- A power system with 167 GW installed capacity
- To mobilize €144.6 billion in financial resources
- To allocate 1.32% of national land for solar and wind generation
- The average generation cost will be €49.39/MWh
Additionally, the integrated demand and supply-side pathway generates 7.34 million jobs and reduces modeled power sector emissions to 49.3 MtCO₂ in 2030, below Bangladesh’s conditional NDC power-sector target of 51.4 MtCO₂. By 2041, emissions will be approximately 61.3 MtCO₂.
✅The findings suggest that:
(i) energy-efficient solutions by electric users should be treated as a first-order planning resource in land- and capital-constrained economies;
(ii) flexible demand can substitute for the storage and renewable capacity overbuild that would have been required;
(iii) the results remain robust under alternative discount-rate and higher solar capital assumptions.
