The global challenge posed by plastics pollution is driving an urgent need to find lasting solutions that address the multiple environmental, economic, political, and social drivers of the problem.
The Circular plastic economy: Bridging theory and practice to train future leaders in sustainable plastics research (CPEN) Training Course hosted at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, between 2nd – 6th December 2025, and across 3 training modules, featured in-person training sessions delivered by Joyashree Roy, Eleni Iacovidou, and Bipashyee Ghosh from AIT, Brunel University of London, and University College London, respectively. After a highly competitive and rigorous selection process from 73 candidates across 18 countries and diverse backgrounds, including industry professionals, government representatives, entrepreneurs, and academicians, 12 finalists were selected.
For 5 days, the participants engaged in intensive and interactive exercises on the circular economy, environmental economics, and policy innovation. Highlights of the training:
✔️Interactive exercises in mapping circular economy transition progress
💬Roleplay sessions simulating key stakeholders in the plastic value chains, the complex dynamics, and the inequity and struggles experienced within the chain.
💡Identification of governance and transformative policy innovation for plastic circularity using examples or hypothetical scenarios from their own country or experience
Participants expressed positive feedback on the course and its relevance to circular economy development and showed interest in future participation. Lastly, certificates were awarded to all participants.
This is only the beginning for the CPEN project, and there will be more training in different realms of the circular plastic economy. Click below to learn more and watch for updates on the CPEN Project:
