“National-scale electricity sector model to strategize national clean energy transition”.

New model developed #“PyPSA-TH”: an open-source, high-resolution model that explores alternative pathways for Thailand’s power sector. It considers both national pledges and priorities and also presents a higher-ambition through integrated demand-side and supply-side strategies.

🔎 Key Insights from PyPSA-TH power sector:

Ø Demand-side efficiency & flexibility help better optimised capacity expansion strategies, reduce generation costs, reduce land footprint, reduce burden on financial mobilization, boost the diverse economic activities with more job prospects.

Ø A 100% clean power system could generate 9.43 million green jobs by 2050 — 1.3× more than supply-side-only expansion pathways.

Ø Integrated demand-side and supply-side strategies deliver more near-term emission reductions compared to supply-side-only planning.

✅ Policy Priorities:

· Focus on energy demand. Strengthen energy efficiency & manage load by demand side flexibility programs using IoTs.

· Mobilize green finance to attract investment in electric appliances and clean technologies.

· Include demand side strategies before planning for scale up of solar, wind, and biomass, along with storage facilities to reach the 2050 neutrality target. No need for negative emission technology deployment.

· Save land use with strategies such as rooftops, floating, and Agrivoltaics.

PyPSA-TH demonstrates national scale power sector pathways to facilitate the clean energy transition, which is helpful to build national priorities. It connects global climate goals with national circumstances, shapes an affordable, land-sparing, and timely route to sustainable development.
