International Conference on Development and Environmental Economics, SANDEE@25

Updated: 6 hours ago

The 25-year celebratory event of the South Asia Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE), the International Conference on Development and Environmental Economics, SANDEE@25, takes place on 12-14 December 2025, Kathmandu, Nepal. SANDEE offered 25 years of grants, trainings, and mentorships from the subject’s best minds and regional peers. A six-monthly review with feedback, policy brief writings, dissemination to policymakers, and regional travel support to foster awareness and understanding. The network continuously provides South Asian researchers with agency in framing local developmental problems with a broader framework to build evidence for decision-making and become agents of change. It has helped retain trained capacity within the region and make the region visible in global platforms through rigorous research outputs.

At the event, the Center Director, Prof. Joyashree Roy, presented a paper on “Power sector for the developing Asian Regions by 2050: Modelling the strategic vision” with Discussant Prof. Shreekant Gupta. She also chaired a session on “Household energy choices” in the region.

Key takeaways:

⚡ Model-based power sector planning can identify economic opportunities with social benefits, within carbon constraints, and provide emission reduction for emerging Asian economies.

📊 SMARTS customized the PyPSA, an open-source national-scale model for planning power sector expansion in Bangladesh and Thailand. Additionally, the IDEEA open-source model was able to show planning of alternative pathways to zero-carbon for Indian states.

💡 Demand side mitigation offers business growth potential with digitalisation, technological integration in the distribution network, energy-efficient appliances market expansion, and regional power-trade.
