“Industrial Energy Efficiency in Bangladesh: Assessing the Journey and Looking Ahead”, by Dr. Firuz Ahamed Nahid, highlighted how 6 key industrial sectors: textiles, steel, cement, ceramics, chemicals, and agro-industries hold significant but largely unrealized energy efficiency potential. Key points:
- The #PyPSA-BD-IDS modeling framework helped integrating #demand-side interventions such as energy efficiency improvements and demand-side flexibility to lower generation costs and land use, while providing faster short-term emission cuts and more jobs.
- Energy savings between 17% - 32%, reduces grid stress and stress on foreign exchange by reducing LNG imports
- The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Master Plan (EECMP) and Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan (IEPMP) for Bangladesh acknowledge energy efficiency, but power sector planning till date is biased towards supply-side expansion
- Energy efficiency must be treated as the “first fuel”, a critical lever for reducing energy waste, avoiding excess investment, and enabling a sustainable, affordable, and secure power future for Bangladesh.
This webinar is part of the 21st Energy Evaluation Asia Pacific Webinar, organized by the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP)
